Practical field visits bolstering classroom lessons
Engagement of PhD and MSc students in practical learning via field visits and lab experiments is bolstering students’ knowledge and skills that would ultimately enable them understand recurrent water management challenges in Ethiopia and Africa.
PhD students in Aquatic and Ecosystem Management visited Zeway and the surrounding lakes, Adami Tulu Pesticides Processing Factory, and Hawassa Industrial Park with Professor Brook Lemma.
PhD Students in Water Science and Technology also visited Kaliti Waste Water Treatment Plant with Dr. Adey, to observe the existing waste water treatment process and challenges.
PhD students of Hydrology and Water resources visited Anjeni watershed, which is one of the oldest experimental watershed within Blue Nile Basin around Debecha area in West Gojam zone with Dr. Seifu Admasu to learn from experimental watersheds and measure hydrological variables. This experimental watershed is managed by Adet Research Center.
Likewise, MSc Students of Water Supply and Sanitation visited Sendafa Sanitary Landfill, Repi Incinerator Plant, Akaki/Kaliti Wastewater Treatment Plant, Legedadi Dam among others to support the theoretical lessons t in classrooms with Dr. Andualem and Dr. Meseret.
Practical field visits are believed to nourish post graduate students with actual skills in water management related issues. Besides, the field visits provide excellent opportunities to the students in understanding the real challenges and pitfalls in water management.
The Center would keep on engaging students in practical field visits to expose them to hands-on experiences in water science, technology, hydrology and water resources, aquatic ecosystem management and related disciplines. The Center managed to coordinate a total of 16 course based field visits to various places since its establishment.
