On January 2, 2025, the Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) hosted a highly informative public seminar titled “From Source to Delivery: A Detailed Anatomy of Urban Water Supply System.” The event featured renowned water management expert, Dr. Tirusew Asefa, who shared his extensive knowledge and insights on the complexities of urban water supply systems.

Dr.Tirusew who is the planning and decision support lead at Tampa Bay Water, one of the largest water supply utilities in Southeast ,USA delivered a comprehensive presentation exploring the various stages of urban water supply—from the sourcing of water in natural reservoirs to the intricate delivery systems that ensure clean water reaches homes and businesses. Through vivid diagrams of case study from the city of Tampa, he illustrated the successful way of maintaining sustainable water supply amid growing populations and environmental changes.

Key topics discussed included the importance of innovative technologies that enhance water purification and distribution, maintaining infrastructure, the impact of climate change on water availability. Dr. Tirusew also emphasized the necessity of community engagement in water conservation efforts and encouraged attendees to take proactive steps in advocating for sustainable practices in their living areas.

The seminar also featured a question and answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with Dr. Tirusew and discuss their concerns and ideas regarding local water issues. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the clarity and depth of the study presented.

As urban areas continue to face significant water supply challenges, Dr. Tirusew Asefa’s seminar has sparked an essential conversation on how communities can work together towards a more sustainable and resilient urban water system.

Currently, Dr. Tirusew is a Fulbright Specialist, hosted by Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management at Addis Ababa University and working on a topic of “Aligning university training and research with urban water supply utilities’ needs”.
