Ethiopia Schools water supply project
Investigation of Shallow Groundwater and Alternative Water Sources for Schools in Ethiopia
The main objective of the project is to assess and map shallow groundwater resources and alternative water sources at selected school locations with the view to providing drinking water. This project is a pilot project which will be scaled up to assess the potential water schemes for schools all over the country,
The specific objectives of each technique employed for the study are given in detail in the respective sections, these objectives are extracted and summarized as follows:
- Carry out inventory of existing water supply sources such as springs, shallow drilled wells, existing municipal or borehole water supply sources, etc.
- Characterization of the areas at regional and in close proximity to the selected schools for groundwater resource availability using RS and GIS techniques,
- Map the geological units and structures with due emphasis on potential water-bearing lithologies and structural setup,
- Characterize the hydrogeology of the areas of interest through the use of hydrogeological maps and water point inventory data;
- Map the subsurface geoelectrical stratification of selected sites and, based on the results, outline the presence of potential water-bearing horizons and their depths;
- Conduct an overview of water quality assessment and environmental assessment over the selected sites;
- Propose preferred sites for sinking shallow drilled and hand dug wells;
- Identify and propose alternative sources of water when and where the groundwater option is not viable;
- Preparation of geospatial data base, and
- Propose equitable water source options to fulfill the students per day consumption ratio (five liter/student/day).
- Identify and propose which sites are more climate resilient water sources.
- Produce a final output of the study that contains the presence of water bearing horizons and their depth, preferred location for sinking shallow wells, provide information on approximate yield and on water quality, propose drilling technique to be used, the casing and pump type, and detailed cost effective bill of quantities with accuracy level of more than 85%; and
- Provide capacity building in terms of knowledge transfer related to the consultancy assignments to relevant MoE staff.
