John Peter Obubu, a Ph.D. candidate at ACEWM defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled
“Impacts of Land Use, Land Cover and Climate Change on The Catchment, Livelihoods and Water Quality: A Case of The Eastern Arm of Lake Kyoga Basin”.
Peter studied his Ph.D. In Water Management specializing in Aquatic Ecosystem Management at ACEWM.
His research focuses on the impacts of land use, land cover (LULC) change, and climate change (CC)in the eastern arm of the Lake Kyoga basin from 2000-to-2020.
According to the results of his research, population increase was the main driver, whereas agriculture was the main pressure of land use and land cover change. The research also highlighted that wetlands and forest degradation increased water treatment costs, hunger, and land fragmentation. Similarly, deaths from floods were some of the impacts of land use, land cover change, and climate change on the catchments and livelihoods. His research findings are expected to inspire policy and decision-makers for designing mitigation measures.
Prof. Seyoum Mengistou of AAU and Dr.Odong Robinson from Makerere University advised Peter throughout his research work, and his examiners were Prof. Argaw Ambelu, Jimma University, and Prof. Bishal K. Sitaula, Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The defense session was chaired by Prof. Abebe Getahun, Professor of Biology at AAU.
