ACEWM Holds Three-Day Training on Strengthening One Health Capacity for Integrated Disease Prevention and Response
The Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) at Addis Ababa University, in collaboration with the One Health NORHED II Project, has officially commenced a three-day training under the theme “Strengthening One Health Capacity for Integrated Disease Prevention and Response Among Human and Animal Healthcare Workers.”
The training is being held from 24–26 August 2026 at the Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM), Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The training was officially opened by Dr. Bikila Warkineh, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Addis Ababa University. In his opening remarks, Dr. Bikila emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration and capacity among professionals working across different sectors to address complex health challenges through an integrated One Health approach.
Peaking on the occasion, Prof. Feleke Zewge, Director of ACEWM, highlighted the importance of bringing stakeholders together to strengthen collective efforts in addressing One Health challenges. He noted that the training creates an important opportunity for participants from different sectors to share experiences, exchange views, and discuss practical approaches to addressing One Health issues through greater collaboration and coordinated action.
The three-day training brings together human and animal healthcare workers, environmental health professionals, and other relevant stakeholders to enhance their knowledge, skills, and capacity for coordinated disease prevention, preparedness, detection, and response. It provides an important platform for strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration and promoting a shared understanding of the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, which is at the core of the One Health approach.
The training is supported by a multidisciplinary team of trainers drawn from different departments and colleges of Addis Ababa University whose academic and professional expertise is closely linked to One Health issues. The trainers represent the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA), College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS), College of Health Sciences, and College of Technology and Built Environment. Their diverse expertise provides participants with an interdisciplinary perspective on the complex interactions among human, animal, and environmental health.
Throughout the training, participants are engaging in presentations, discussions, and practical learning activities designed to strengthen their capacity to identify and respond to emerging and re-emerging health threats. Particular emphasis is being given to integrated approaches, effective coordination, information sharing, and collaborative action across sectors.
The training is currently underway at ACEWM and will continue through 26 August 2026. The initiative reflects the commitment of ACEWM and the One Health NORHED II Project to strengthening professional capacity, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoting integrated approaches to disease prevention and response.
