A PhD candidate at the Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management, Abayneh Melaku Manaye, has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, marking a significant academic milestone in the field of public health and water management.

His research, titled “Efficacy of Hand Hygiene Products, Hygiene Practice, and Determinants among Healthcare Workers in Addis Ababa Hospitals, Ethiopia,” examined the effectiveness of commonly used hand hygiene products, assessed hygiene practices among healthcare professionals, and identified key factors influencing compliance in hospital settings across Addis Ababa. The study provides valuable evidence to strengthen infection prevention and control strategies in Ethiopian healthcare facilities and similar contexts in developing countries.

The dissertation was primarily supervised by Prof. Argaw Ambelu of Addis Ababa University, with co-supervision by Dr. Tesfaye Admasu, also from Addis Ababa University. The defense session was chaired by Prof. Feleke Zewge of the same institution.

The examination committee included Dr. Adey Feleke of Addis Ababa University as the internal examiner and Prof. Alemayehu Haddis of Jimma University as the external examiner.

The successful defense reflects both the candidate’s scholarly contribution and the continued commitment of the Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management to advancing research that addresses pressing public health challenges in Ethiopia and beyond.
